Sagenburg "The Hostile Brothers"

Sterrenberg Castle is surrounded by the legend "Of the Hostile Brothers."

Instead of a family feud, today's visitor can expect a castle with facilities for celebrations, vacation apartments, as well as a restaurant with an outdoor terrace and a magnificent view. Tours through the ancient walls take place on certain dates during the season.

Sterrenberg Castle is likely one of the oldest castle complexes on the Middle Rhine: its keep was built no later than the end of the 12th century.

In addition to its age, the Sterrenberg Castle has the unique feature of two consecutive curtain walls. The outer wall is even stronger and taller than the inner one and is clearly directed against the neighboring Liebenstein Castle. These two once bitterly rivaling castle complexes illustrate the centuries-old issue of changing ownership in the Middle Rhine Valley. In medieval times, territories of different rulers were often located right next to each other. Various hostilities among princes, counts, or abbots manifested in counter-castles that fortified the realms. According to the legend of the Hostile Brothers, it is said that in the case of Sterrenberg Castle and Liebenstein, they were furthermore siblings who built the fortified structures amidst their quarrel.
